The Adams State University Luther Bean Museum continues its lecture series in recognition of the Colorado/America 150/250 Celebration. The lecture, “Stephen Quiller – approach to color, painting, plein-air, and studio water media work,” by Stephen Quiller begins at 5 p.m. Monday, Feb. 23, in McDaniel Hall 101. Quiller, an internationally known painter, works primarily in watermedia, monotypes, and intaglio printmaking. He taught in the Adams State Art Department from 1981 through 1989. The lecture is free and open to the public and light refreshments will be served.
Quiller will show a seven-minute video, “adagio for the painter,” about high country painting; discuss his approach to color, and present his studio watermedia paintings and paintings from different parts of the world. To close out the lecture, Quiller will briefly discuss the Creede Center for the Arts, a nonprofit project involving community, nature, and art programs, culminating with an international watercolor museum, and collection.
Stephen Quiller, a Dolphin Fellow, is a signature member of the American Watercolor Society, the National Watercolor Society, National Society for Painters in Acrylic and Casein, Rocky Mountain National Watermedia, and Watercolor West. He received the 2018 Silver Medal and the 2014 Gold Medal of Honor at the American Watercolor Society’s International Exhibitions as well as many other honors. Known for watermedia and color, Quiller has written seven best-selling books on the subjects and created twenty artist instructional videos on color, composition and watermedia. He has signature lines of watercolor, palettes and brushes produced by the Jack Richeson Company and developed the Quiller Color Wheel used by artists throughout the world. Quiller’s paintings have been on covers and the subjects of articles in many leading art magazines. He has served as a juror for most of the regional and international watermedia exhibitions and conducts a limited number of national and international seminars annually. However, Quiller spends most of his time painting on-location or at his studio in Creede. He aspires to capture the essence, the rhythm and spirit of the San Juan Mountain Range. He has painted professionally since 1972. Quiller and his wife, Marta, live in Creede and during the summer months run the Quiller Gallery where his works are on view.
