Adams State University’s Semillas de la Tierra Mexican Folklorico Dance group invites campus and community members to join, starting August 19, 2025. Under the direction of Domingo Estrada, the group rehearses Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7 to 9 p.m. in Adams State’s East Campus Gym on First Street.

Semillas dancer Marlene Garcia Araiza said, “There is no charge to participate; we welcome anyone who is willing to learn something new and just have fun,” she said. Semillas hosts its annual stage show, titled: Baile de Primavera (Spring Dance) in early May, as well as 10 to 20 small performances throughout the year.

Garcia Araiza graduated from Adams State in 2022 and began her position on campus as STEM Success Specialist and Data Analyst with the NSF HSI STEM Grant. Shortly thereafter, she joined Semillas.

“I did not have any prior dancing experience aside from the Norteño and Huapango dance style of Northern Mexico passed down from my family,” she explained. “Experiencing the beauty of folklorico helped me reconnect with my roots away from home.”

The oldest club on the Adams State campus, Semillas de la Tierra was founded in 1972 by Herman Martinez, Ph.D., Adams State Class of 1969, and his wife, Patsy, Class of 1970 and 1990. Herman was the new administrator of migrant education at Adams State at the time.

Community members interested in joining Semillas de la Tierra are asked to text Estrada at 719-580-2891. Adams State students, faculty, and staff may contact Garcia Araiza at 719-480-8469, or email, mgarciaaraiza@adams.edu.
