SLV Youth of the Year receives scholarship to Adams State

Lisa Mix, the 2016 SLV Boys and Girls Club Youth of the Year, accepts a four-year scholarship to Adams State, presented by President Beverlee J. McClure and Tammy Lopez, ASU Foundation executive director. Chris Lopez, director of the club expressed his appreciation. "This makes me proud to be an alumnus of Adams State."

An Alamosa High School freshman, Mix said: "I am excited to be awarded this scholarship. My mom is going to be so happy, too." A member of the SLV Boys and Girls Club for seven years, she has attended a leadership conference and is active in the Torch Club. Outside the club, she helps special needs students and volunteers at the Gingerbread Daycare Learning Center. Mix also assistant coached her brother’s Special Olympic track team.

When she accepted the Youth of the Year Award at the local club, Mix spoke about overcoming being bullied, coping with her parent’s divorce, standing-up for her brother with special needs, and worrying when her mother had a serious accident. Mix came out of the experiences stronger and more resilient and determined to help others.

McClure, who was present during Mix’ acceptance speech, said she was impressed with her story. "Lisa will be perfect for Adams State."
