Southern Colorado Film Festival opens October 15

The Southern Colorado Film Festival is the San Luis Valley’s leading venue for showcasing independent film production. Now in its third year, the festival will be showcasing creative works from around the world. Through the support of organizations such as the Southern Colorado Film Commission, Adams State University Community Partnerships, the Colorado Office of Film, Television, and Media, the Alamosa County Local Marketing District Board, and the ASU Common Reading Experience among many others, the festival will once again bring its unique style of cultural content to the San Luis Valley.

The festival will start at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 15, with the opening feature and a reception in the Adams State Richardson Hall Auditorium. From October 16 through October 18 the film festival will continue at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. in the Art Building room 227.

This year, the festival will showcase 20 independent films with national and international significance. The festival’s theme is "Mountains of Possibility," showcasing the many potential successes all around us – often just behind a challenging obstacle or limited way of thinking. By considering the opportunities all around us, we can recognize new ways forward.

Potential highlights include Landfill Harmonic, which follows a youth orchestra from a community built on a massive landfill; A Sinner in Mecca, which has recently been featured in the New York Times among other publications and covers a gay filmmaker’s journey into Saudi Arabia where both homosexuality and filming are forbidden; From the Land to Your Table, a documentary looking at the cultural diversity of food markets across seven Latin American countries; and Bringing it Home, a film illustrating the past, present, and future of industrial hemp. The festival also includes the Land, Water, and Fire short film selection, which features a number of films from the San Luis Valley, as well as a local foods reception to follow.
