The Adams State University Human Performance and Physical Education (HPPE) Department will host the annual SLV Dust Devils Special Olympics Showcase at 1 p.m. Sunday, March 3, in Plachy Hall. The event is a fundraiser with all proceeds going to the local Special Olympics program to cover supplies, equipment, and travel expenses for the year.

The event will feature an exciting basketball game played in the Special Olympics Unified format, which places teams of three Special Olympics athletes and two non-Special Olympics athletes (Adams State students) on the court at any given time. “It is so much more than athletics,” Peggy Johnson, HPPE instructor, said.

Admission is free and there will be a silent auction and entertaining half-time activity. Donations are also welcome. “We are excited for this event and hope to see everyone there cheering each other on and celebrating the spirit of Special Olympics,” added Johnson.

Since the late 1990s, Adams State has hosted Special Olympics events including Adams State student athletes from the Athletic Department. “In recent years the HPPE Sport Facility and Event Management class has been instrumental in making these events a source of pride for Adams State,” Johnson said.

Special Olympics is a year-round program of sports training and competition for children and adults with intellectual disabilities, providing opportunities to participate in activities such as basketball, bowling, track and many other sports. “More importantly, it gives these athletes something to work for and show off all their hard work,” Johnson added. “Everyone deserves the chance to compete in a fun and safe environment.”
