Sports Registered Dietician will speak on Adams State campus

The Adams State University Human Performance and Physical Education Department (HPPE) presents Nutritional Myths and Practices of Successful Athletes: Implications for Active, Non-Elite Performance, by Sports Registered Dietician and Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist Dave Ellis, at 6 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 17, in Carson Auditorium, located in the Student Union Building. The event is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be served.

Competitive athletes have come to understand the benefits of good nutrition to athletic performance. With the dramatic growth in the number of Sports Registered Dieticians, and the increased number of teams in both the collegiate and professional ranks employing nutrition professionals, today’s athlete is much more versed on the importance of diet to success on the field, than were athletes of a generation ago.

Through scientific data and anecdotal information culled from real life examples of elite athletes’ dietary practices, this lecture will provide information on diets, foods and supplements that have been proven to enhance physical performance, as well as nutritional practices of questionable effectiveness.

During this talk, the audience will learn the key tenets of a high performance diet, discuss examples of diets of known efficacy, and dietary practices of dubious benefits. You will also learn to better assess the veracity of claims made about sport nutrition products. Information on how the non-elite, physically active individual can use diet to their advantage will also be discussed.

Ellis, president of Sports Alliance Inc., creator of Fueling Tactics® System, and the first president of the Collegiate and Professional Sports Dietitians Association, has over 30 years of experience working with top athletes, numerous collegiate and professional sports teams. He is widely recognized as one of the key influencers in the world of sports nutrition, an innovator for his training table designs and his approach to body composition and frame assessment of athletes. As a dedicated educator, Ellis speaks regularly at various health and nutrition conferences and also blogs on a variety of sports nutrition related issues.

The event is sponsored by American College of Sports Medicine, Rocky Mountain American College of Sports Medicine, and the Adams State HPPE Department. For more information, please contact Dr. Tracey Robinson at tlrobins@adams.edu.
