Online Delivery

The Doctor of Philosophy in Counselor Education and Supervision is offered online through live synchronous instruction and requires three, one-week residencies. The Ph.D. program is a 60-hour program.

Mission Statement

The Doctor of Philosophy in Counselor Education and Supervision at Adams State University prepares graduates to work as counselor educators, supervisors, researchers, leaders, and practitioners in academic and clinical settings. The program is committed to providing equitable access to digitally delivered instruction in counselor education. Doctoral students are immersed in a climate of scholarly inquiry and prepared to extend the knowledge base of the counseling profession through various professional roles, including teaching, supervision, research, counseling, leadership, and advocacy.

Ph.D. Program Objectives

To prepare counselor educators and supervisors with knowledge and skills to examine, integrate, and critically evaluate counseling theory and evidence-based practices to provide ethical and culturally responsive interventions across counseling settings.

To prepare counselor educators and supervisors with knowledge and skills to develop a personal model of supervision that adapts to the supervisees’ developmental level; the supervision modality, which includes various technologies; evaluative and gatekeeping processes; and culturally responsive strategies.

To prepare counselor educators with the knowledge and skills to develop a teaching philosophy grounded in andragogy and learning theories, culturally supportive teaching methods, and best practices in instructional design and delivery, including online teaching.

To prepare counselor educators with the knowledge and skills to engage in quantitative and qualitative research methods, program evaluation, and grant writing for publishing and presenting at the scholarly level. 

To prepare counselor educators and supervisors with knowledge and skills to ethically engage in leadership roles in higher education and other professional organizations and to advocate at the individual, professional, system, and policy levels. 

The Ph.D. in Counselor Education and Supervision at Adams State University prepares graduates to:

  • Design and deliver effective instruction, demonstrating competence in course planning, teaching strategies, and assessment of learning in both synchronous and asynchronous formats
  • Provide developmentally appropriate supervision to counselors in training, applying relevant models, skills, and ethical practices
  • Generate new knowledge to inform professional counseling practice
  • Engage in scholarly activities under the mentorship of counselor education program faculty and disseminate scholarly work by publishing in peer-reviewed journals and/or presenting at professional conferences
  • Plan and engage in advocacy with support and mentoring from faculty
  • Assume leadership roles within the counseling profession and/or their area(s) of specialization
  • Understand and apply current trends and technologies in counseling service delivery, counselor education, and counselor supervision
  • Pursue credentialing that aligns with their professional career goals
