Program Goals and Student Learning Outcomes

The following program goals are based upon The Essentials of Baccalaureate Education for Professional Nursing Practice, published by the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (2021). Faculty strive to facilitate the student learning outcomes throughout the curriculum and upon completion of the BSN program, the graduate will meet the student learning outcomes that support the program goals.

1. Provide Knowledge for Nursing Practice including a foundation in liberal arts and natural and social sciences.

  • SLO 1.1: Students will demonstrate an understanding of nursing’s distinct perspective in relation to other disciplines with shared perspectives
  • SLO 1.2: Students will apply theory and research-based knowledge from nursing, the arts, humanities and other sciences.
  • SLO 1.3: Students will demonstrate clinical judgement through incorporation of knowledge from nursing and other disciplines

2. Provide Person-Centered Care which focuses on the individual within multiple complicated contexts.

  • SLO 2.1 Students will demonstrate promotion of caring relationships with positive patient outcomes
  • SLO 2.2:  Students will demonstrate a comprehensive assessment and communicate findings.
  • SLO 2.3: Students will develop a plan of care using evidenced-based interventions to improve patient outcomes
  • SLO 2.4: Students will demonstrate accountability for care delivery through implementing individualized plans of care.
  • SLO 2.5: Students will evaluate outcome of care and recognize needs for modification to care

3. Provide Population Health education that spans the healthcare delivery continuum from public health prevention to disease management of diverse populations through a variety of community partnerships.

  • SLO 3.1: Students will manage population health through assessment of priorities of a community
  • SLO 3.2: Students will demonstrate an understanding of the socioeconomic impact of the delivery of healthcare.
  • SLO 3.3 Students will demonstrate an understanding of equitable population health through describing impacts of policies on population outcomes and methods to support policy development.
  • SLO 3.4 Students will describe processes to protect population health during disasters and public health emergencies.

4. Engage in Scholarship for the Nursing Discipline to improve health outcomes and transform health care.

  • SLO 4.1 Students will demonstrate the use of theoretical framework models in nursing practice.
  • SLO 4.2 Students will participate in implementation of a practice change through the use of integrating best evidence.
  • SLO 4.3: Students will identify the impact of equity issues in research.

5. Provide Quality and Safety through Employment of established and emerging principles of safety and improvement science.

  • SLO 5.1: Students will apply quality improvement principles in care delivery.
  • SLO 5.2 Students will demonstrate accountability in actions to reduce patient harm
  • SLO 5.3 Students will identify potential level of risks within a work environment

6. Engage in Interprofessional Partnerships through Intentional collaboration across professions to optimize care, enhance the healthcare experience, and strengthen outcomes.

  • SLO 6.1 Students will identify and use various communication tools and techniques effectively
  • SLO 6.2 Students will apply principles of team dynamics to facilitate effective team functioning
  • SLO 6.3 Students will incorporate interprofessional collaboration to optimize patient care.
  • SLO 6.4 Students will be able to effectively communicate in verbal, written and electronic formats

7. Provide Systems-Based Practice in which nurses effectively and proactively coordinate resources to provide safe, quality, and equitable care to diverse populations.

  • SLO 7.1 Students will describe the difference between various healthcare delivery environments across the continuum of care.
  • SLO 7.2 Students will describe the considerations of efficiency, value and cost in providing care
  • SLO 7.3 Students will demonstrate ways to optimize system effectiveness through innovation and evidenced-based practice.

8. Provide Informatics and Healthcare Technologies in accordance with best practice and professional and regulatory standards

  • SLO 8.1 Students will demonstrate the use of information and communication technology to gather data, create information and generate knowledge.
  • SLO 8.2 Students will demonstrate the use of information and communication technologies and informatics processes to deliver safe nursing care in a variety of settings.
  • SLO 8.3 Students will demonstrate the use of information and communication technology to support documentation of care and communication.
  • SLO 8.4 Students will identify the ethical, legal, professional and regulatory standards of the use of information and communication technology.

9. Demonstrate Professionalism through Formation and cultivation of a sustainable professional identity.

  • SLO 9.1 Students will apply principles of professional ethics and human rights in patient care and professional situations.
  • SLO 9.2 Students will identify the relevant laws, policies and regulations that they are to adhere to.
  • SLO 9.3 Students will demonstrate professional standards of moral, ethical and legal behavior while interacting within academic and healthcare settings
  • SLO 9.4 Students will describe nursing’s professional identity and contributions to the healthcare team.

10. Provide Personal, Professional, and Leadership Development

  • SLO 10.1 Students will demonstrate health, self-care behaviors that promote wellness and resiliency.
  • SLO 10.2 Students will demonstrate the use of personal reflection of one’s practice and use comprehensive feedback to improve performance.
  • SLO 10.3 Students will identify leadership principles and theories and recognize the importance of nursing leaders in policy and practice issues.

11. Demonstrate professional writing proficiency in accordance with the Nursing Profession

  • SLO 11.1 Students will demonstrate effective use of professional writing using the American Psychological Association format.
  • SLO 11.2 Students will demonstrate writing proficiency at the baccalaureate level
  • SLO 11.3 Students will demonstrate preparedness for graduate level writing.
