Molina Speaks comes to Adams State

Release by Kaitlyn Kelley

The Adams State University Office of Title V Grant Initiatives is pleased to host Molina Speaks, a writer, poet, professor, and filmmaker, at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 30 in Carson Auditorium located in the Student Union Building north end.

During his presentation entitled SPEAK (Standing Proud for Equality and Knowledge), Speaks will discuss themes presented in the movie “The Hate U Give,” including intersectionality, colorism, inclusivity and how to confront difficult issues that surround the San Luis Valley and the Hispanic culture. Speaks will also read from his anthology, “Lyrical Mediations of Molina Speaks, 2007-2019.” Texts from the anthology will be used as starting points for certain topics and personal stories.

Speaks actively works with youth to help them develop their imaginations and creativity, including leading the Youth On Record Fellowship program, a music education and professional development initiative for emerging artists between the ages of 18-23. The program has recently earned the recognition for being the Best Place to Find the Future of the Music Business. In addition to inspiring today’s youth, Speaks performs his own music/poetry and is a member of the Chicano Afrobeat Orchestra Pink Hawks, and Roots Rice and Beans.

The event is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be served. Parking permits in Adams State parking lots are not required after 5 p.m.
