Art Department

Goal 1 – To enhance students’ critical thinking and writing skills.

Learning Outcomes:

  • 1.1 Students will be able to apply appropriate critical language to artworks verbally and in writing.
  • 1.2 Art education students will be able to apply critical language appropriate to the developmental stages of the children with whom they are working.

Goal 2 – To promote in students the skills necessary for producing visual art pieces that are creative, well crafted, and effective in communicating concepts of the artists choosing.

Learning Outcomes:

  • 2.1. Students will demonstrate technical ability and craftsmanship in their artworks.
  • 2.2. Students will demonstrate understanding of the elements of art and principals of design through effective compositions.
  • 2.3. Students’ artworks will communicate concepts effectively. 2.4. Students’ artworks will show originality.

Goal 3 – To instill in students a global understanding of the visual arts and promote appreciation of the visual arts within such a multicultural framework.

Learning Outcomes:

  • 3.1 Students will understand cross-cultural relationships within the history of art and be able to apply them to their art-making.
  • 3.2 Students will recognize the characteristics of the art styles of different cultures and time periods

Goal #4 –T o provide student with the skills needed to work as art professionals or pursue an advanced degree.

Learning Outcomes:

  • 4.1 Art Education students will be licensed as art educators (K-12)
  • 4.2 Students will be able to prepare for and mount an exhibition of their artwork
  • 4.3 Students will be able to estimate expenses and establish prices for their artworks.
  • 4.4 Students will develop a professional quality portfolio.
  • 4.5 BFA students will have the skills necessary to enter MA or MFA programs

Goal 5 – To provide a cultural resource in contemporary visual art for Adams State College and the San Luis Valley through exhibitions by locally, regionally and nationally know artist.

Learning Outcomes:

  • 5.1. Students will participate in art exhibitions and opening receptions.
  • 5.2. Students will interact with visiting artists working in a variety of media.
