Adams State places students into mathematics courses using a variety of metrics including: high school coursework, grades earned in high school mathematics classes, high school GPA, and ACT/SAT mathematics test scores. Students are allowed to enroll in mathematics courses according to the highest metric. For example, if a student completed a high school calculus course with a grade of B, but scored low on the ACT mathematics test (not required) – the student would be placed into calculus (MATH 120) rather than a lower-level class. Additionally, students can request an interview with the the mathematics department chair if they seek a higher placement. The Director of Academic Advising, the Director of the School of STEM, or their designee, conducts interviews with transfer students lacking any previous transcripted coursework in mathematics to determine their best options for mathematics placement.

For specific placement criteria, please see the Math Placement Policy – 100-14-01
