• A student with a disability may request accommodation by scheduling an intake appointment with and providing appropriate documentation to the Accessibility Services- Office. The Accessibility Services- Services Coordinator reviews accommodation requests and discusses accommodation procedures and options with the student. Students choosing to access disability support services should contact the Accessibility Services Coordinator as soon as possible after acceptance to Adams State, and should be aware that late notification may result in complications for establishing accommodations in a timely fashion.
  • Requesting accommodation or self-identifying as having a disability is voluntary.
  • Students who qualify for services work with the Accessibility Services Coordinator to determine reasonable accommodations, academic adjustments, and/or auxiliary aids and services. The Accessibility Services Coordinator may consult with faculty, staff, and outside professionals regarding essential course elements and reasonable accommodations. Please note the student’s disabling condition will remain unknown by staff outside of The Office of Disability Services, unless student chooses to share this information voluntarily.
  • Reasonable accommodation is individualized to the person and the situation.
  • Reasonable accommodation need not be the best accommodation available, as long as it effectively provides meaningful access to the program or activity.
  • The Accessibility Services Coordinator will provide letters of academic accommodation for faculty members that certify the existence of the student’s disability and recommend reasonable accommodations. Students will deliver the forms to professors who teach classes in which the student is requesting accommodation, or the Accessibility Services Coordinator can email the letters to instructors.
  • While the letter will indicate general accommodations, it is the students’ responsibility to meet with each professor or instructor to request the specific accommodations necessary for each class.
  • Students with disabilities are responsible for contacting the Accessibility Services Coordinator if reasonable accommodations are not implemented in a timely way or are not effective.
Common academic accommodations include, but are not limited to: exam modifications or adjustments, note-takers, readers, scribes, taped textbooks, alternate print formats, assistive technology, course substitutions, priority registration, recorded lectures, and classroom relocations.
  • Policies and procedures for the most commonly requested accommodations at Adams State are included in this handbook.

Accommodation is not required if

  • it would create a direct threat to the health and safety of others
  • it would require a substantial change in an essential element of the program or a substantial alteration in the manner in which services are provided
  • it would create an undue financial or administrative burden on the College.
