Confidentiality

Our Commitment to Your Privacy

Your privacy is our priority. The Counseling Center is a safe and confidential space for you to talk about anything on your mind. What you say here, stays here.

Everyone on our team—from our professional counselors to our front desk staff—is committed to protecting your confidentiality. We will not share any information about you with anyone—including parents, professors, or other university offices—without your express written permission. Student workers and trainees at the Counseling Center do not have access to your counseling records.

When We Are Legally and Ethically Required to Share Information

Your safety and the safety of others is our highest responsibility. Colorado state law and professional ethics require us to share information in a few specific, rare situations. If one of these situations arises, your counselor will make every effort to discuss it with you first.

Exceptions to confidentiality are:

  • Risk of Harm to Yourself: If we believe you are at immediate risk of seriously harming yourself.
  • Risk of Harm to Others: If you state a clear and immediate intent to seriously harm another person.
  • Abuse of a Child or At-Risk Adult: If we learn of or have reasonable suspicion of the abuse or neglect of a child, an at-risk elder, or an adult with an intellectual or developmental disability.
  • Court Order: If we receive a subpoena or are otherwise ordered by a court of law.

If you have any questions about privacy or these exceptions, please talk to your counselor. Your comfort and trust are essential to us.
