The Grizzly Testing & Learning Center (GTLC) has partnered with the Office of Accessibility Services to provide several accommodations for students with documented disabilities. If you would like more information on the steps necessary to receive these services at Adams State University, please contact Adams State’s ADA Accessibility Services.

Our Services

Currently the GTLC offers a variety of services for students with Letters of Accommodation. Before these services can be provided, students need to ensure that they have a copy of their Letters of Accommodation and that the services listed below are indicated in the letter.  Please see the information below on the services we can provide:

Note Taking

A peer note taker can be hired to assist with the acquisition of lecture materials in selected course. Peer note takers will take notes in class on the lecture material, videos, handouts, and test preparation. Note takers will bring these items to GTLC to be copied and sent to each student requesting notes for their particular courses.

GTLC can provide a physical copy of these notes, but we will typically provide a digital PDF copy of all notes received. The digital notes are sent via email from notes@adams.edu.

As not all students who qualify for this service request to utilize it, we do ask that students who would like a note taker, schedule appointments to officially request.

Test Readers & Test Scribes

Test readers and scribes are individuals employed by Adams State to assist students during exams taken at GTLC. These individuals will sit with students during their exams, reading the exam as printed and transcribing exactly what students dictate to them. Readers and scribes cannot help with course or exam content and cannot answer questions related to the exam material.

A test reader or scribe can be provided upon request for exams taken with the GTLC. Students need to ensure that they have a Letter of Accommodation indicating this need and they communicate this need with us at least 48 hours before their exam appointments to ensure we have the services available.

Reduced Distraction Testing Environment

Sometimes taking an exam in class can be stressful and distracting. As such, the Office of Accessibility Services can indicate the need to take exams in a distraction reduced environment. The Grizzly Testing and Learning Center is such an environment and students can request their exams and quizzes to be sent to us.

We have a number of private testing rooms available with sound machines to help reduce the external distracting noises. We do require all students to schedule exams, allowing for the full amount of time, to ensure we have rooms available.

Assistive Technology

The Grizzly Testing and Learning Center has a number of items that are intended to assist students with their academic success. These items vary from those that students may check out to those that may only be utilized at GTLC. Please see the description of all these items below:

The following items are available for check-out with the accompanying documentation from the Office Accessibility Services:

  • LiveScribe Smart Pens: pens with integrated voice recording mechanisms which matches written notes with recorded class lecture.
  • Recorders: journalistic quality recorders that allow students to easily record and play back lectures.

The following items are available for use at GTLC with an appointment and are not available for check out or installation on personal devices:

  • Anxiety software: allows users to explore a variety of computer activities to assist in the identification and control of anxiety.

If you require any of these services or devices, please reach out so that we can help make the process as simple as possible.
