The Grizzly Testing & Learning Center (GTLC) provides coordination of peer tutoring services and study sessions. Services are provided on a first-come, first-serve basis and are free of charge.

Tutoring and study sessions are facilitated by peer tutors in both small groups and individual sessions. Our tutors participate in training activities each semester to hone specific skills to better assist students in their engagement and understanding of the course curriculum.

Types of Tutoring We Offer

Group & Individual Tutoring

The Grizzly Testing & Learning Center offers academic support for undergraduate on-campus students through small group sessions, or individual sessions, led by trained peer tutors.

This assistance allows students to develop a deeper understanding of course concepts with the support of tutors who clarify difficult course material, review homework assignments and provide motivation as role models.

Request a Tutor: To request a tutor, please stop by the Grizzly Testing and Learning Center to fill out a paper request. Once we have this request, we will schedule according to your available times.

Cancel a Session: If you cannot attend a session, you need to call or email the testing center AT LEAST 24 HOURS ahead of time. Students will be contacted and provided a warning if two missed sessions occur and sessions can be cancelled if a third missed session is documented.

Supplemental Instruction (SI)

Supplemental Instruction (SI) is an academic assistance program that utilizes peer-assisted study sessions. The SI leader is the “model student” facilitator who helps students to integrate course content and learning/study strategies.

SI leaders attend course lectures, take notes, read all assigned materials, and conduct two to three out-of-class sessions a week. Sessions are regularly-scheduled, informal review sessions in which students compare notes, discuss readings, develop organizational tools, and predict test items. Students learn how to integrate course content and study skills while working together.

Benefits of SI:

  • SI is proactive and participatory rather than reactive and passive
  • Students earn higher grades while they learn effective study skills
  • SI provides peer collaborative learning experiences
  • SI makes efficient use of study time
  • SI provides an opportunity for students to develop relationships to other students, faculty, and staff

Peer Assisted Study Sessions (PASS)

Peer Assisted Study Sessions (PASS) is an academic assistance program, where students work together to reinforce key concepts and develop effective study strategies.

Each session incorporates how to learn and what to learn. These sessions are not group tutoring sessions, but instead group study sessions guided by a trained student who is also taking the course with you. Whether you are a top performer or could use some improvement, you will benefit from the skills and understanding gained from attending PASS.

The most obvious result of PASS is that the students, who attend regularly, consistently earn a higher grade and withdraw less often than those who do not attend.

We tutor writers at all levels and for all courses, and we provide assistance with writing graduate school applications, resumes, and other.
